Hair Washing Rules & Best Tips

1. Washing daily is ok.

How often you wash your hair depends on your texture. Finer hair needs to be washed daily or every other day; thicker or coarser hair can get washed every second day or even twice or once a week.

If you have fine hair, you can substit a volumizing conditioner in place of your shampoo every other wash to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils. Fine hair has 50 percent less protein than medium or thick hair, which means it's weak and needs to be strengthened.

2. Dial down the water temperature.

For the best wash, use lukewarm water while you cleanse to open the hair cuticle and use cold water to rinse conditioner to close the cuticle.

3. Pay attention to what you're using to wash.

It is important to make sure your shampoo is gentle yet powerful enough to cleanse the hair while adding moisture back into it. When selecting a shampoo look for products that are sulfate, paraben and silicone-free.

4. Use it right

Shampoo is made to clean the scalp, so that should always be your focus in the shower — not shampooing from top to ends. The lather in your shampoo should be strong enough to clear out any residue on the ends when you are washing it out. The opposite is true for conditioner. Stay away from conditioning at the scalp and instead focus on mid-length to ends.

The most important step? Rinse! If you think you've rinsed enough, keep rinsing!

5. New technique for conditioner use

1. In the shower, twist your hair to wring out extra water and gently detangle with your fingers.

2. Section your hair in half like you have two pigtails.

3. Apply your conditioner or masque starting at the ends and working your way up toward the scalp. Let it sit about 2-3 minutes and rinse thoroughly.

What is SLS and SLES?

Sulphate compounds are found in many personal care products such as shampoos, facial cleansers and body washes.

The main sulphates used in skincare are sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), sodium dodecyl sulphate, and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES). These compounds are produced from petroleum and plant sources such as coconut and palm oil.

The main use for SLS and SLES in products is to create lather, giving a stronger impression of cleaning power.

When they’re used in shampoos, sulfates are very efficient cleansers — maybe too efficient — and can pull a lot of natural oil from hair and skin.
The potential symptoms of an issue with SLS are redness, sensitivity, dryness,

flaking, or a ‘tight’ feeling; most products containing sulphates foam, and your skin will probably feel squeaky clean afterwards - but do you really want your skin to feel like your dishes? That tight, 'clean' feeling is the result of your natural oils being swiped away, your skin drying out and your all-important barrier being impaired.

Some studies have suggested that SLES are safer to use than SLS, however, both have a potential irritant effect.

Try going sulfate-free for a week to see if it makes a difference for you. This can help eliminate sulfate as cause for your irritation.

Paraben-free: Should you care?

You might have seen bottles of shampoo and conditioner labeled as sulfate- and paraben-free, but what does this actually mean when it comes to what we put on our hair?

Parabens are preservatives used in cosmetics to give them a longer shelf life. To get a bit science-y, parabens are esters (a compound formed from acid and alcohol) of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The FDA says the most common are methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.

Parabens are not water-soluble and can penetrate the skin. As a result, repeated application of a product or multiple products containing parabens could mean almost continuous exposure. These endocrine-disrupting chemicals can be absorbed through the skin, blood, and the digestive system. Studies have shown that some parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body’s cells, and while estrogenic activity is associated with certain forms of breast cancer, parabens have been found present in breast tumors.

These preservatives affect your body in many different ways, usually in the form of skin problems. People with sensitive skin find that products containing paraben can cause dermatitis and allergic reactions. Most worryingly, however, a British study has linked Parabens to breast cancer.

There is still some debate whether it truly increases the risks, but why would you take the chance?

Let It Down!

The first three days are extremely important for the treatment. During this time, people should avoid putting their hair in a ponytail. Braids and hair clips are also forbidden.

On its own, cotton is harmless but it creates friction. After a keratin treatment, the friction could be highly damaging. The recommendation is to change the pillowcase. Choose a material like silk. Avoid any derivate of cotton.

✅ STEP 1: DON’T USE TO MUCH OF IT
